Operating Engineers Health & Welfare Fund

In 1954, I.U.O.E., Local 12, won an important benefit for its members - the Health & Welfare Fund.  For more than 45 years, the Board of Trustees of the Fund has worked to provide broader and better health benefits for every eligible participant.

Currently, the fund provides health and welfare benefits for over 15,000 active participants and about 7,000 retirees.  Including dependents, approximately 100,000 people are eligible to receive benefits from the Fund, and an average of 5,000 claims are processed every day.

Since the first claims were paid in April 1955, the Fund has paid benefits in excess of $1.6 billion.

Operating Engineers Pension Trust

The Operating Engineers Pension Trust was created June 1, 1960, by a negotiated trust agreement between I.U.O.E., Local 12 and the employers who are party to the labor agreements.

The Trust awarded the first pension in 1962.  At that time, a Current Service Credit was valued at $1.50 credit per month.  For pension effective on and after November 1, 2001, the value of the Current Service Credit was increased to $54.00 per credit.

Since its inception in 1960, more than 24,000 pensions have been awarded and the Trust has provided benefits in excess of $2 billion.

Operating Engineers Vacation-Holiday Savings Trust

The Vacation-Holiday Trust was created in July 1963.  The Trust credits employer contributions to a vacation account for each participant, based on reported hours.

Since its inception in 1963, the Trust has credited employer contributions to employee vacation accounts in excess of $560 million.

Operating Engineers
Journeyman-Apprentice Training Trust

The Training Trust was established on August 1, 1964.

The Trust conducts training and apprenticeship programs.  These programs educate, train and retrain persons to perform work covered by the collective bargaining agreements, to acquire new skills, to upgrade skills, and to develop skills required to meet technological changes in the construction industry.

The Trust has training programs at a facility in Whittier, California.  Since its inception, 3,500 apprentices have graduated from the training program and thousands of additional operating engineers have acquired and upgraded their skills.
